Biography
Larbi Cherkaoui is a Moroccan painter born in 1972. A graduate in plastic arts, he proposes an artistic approach based on the hybridization of traditional Arabic calligraphy and Fine Arts. His characters flood the canvases, occupying the space with their roundness. Through this approach, Larbi Cherkaoui seeks to free the Arabic letter from its orthodoxy to make it a universal sign, which would be part of the cosmogony, inscribing it in an optical space of abstract type.
He makes his own supports, working with meticulousness on canvas, leather and wood. The result is striking chromatic compositions, masterfully combining fury and finesse, darkness and acidity.
